July is National Park and Recreation Month

TOPEKA, KAN. – July is National Parks and Recreation Month and Shawnee County Parks + Recreation has a month’s worth of activities planned. The community can access a calendar of events at https://bit.ly/SCPRParksandRecreationMonth

“July is a month to celebrate the important role that parks and recreation plays in our community,” said Tim Laurent, director, SCP+R. “Parks and recreation creates a sense of community and helps attract and retain families and businesses in Shawnee County.”

Laurent notes that SCP+R has 110 parks, 60 miles of trails and 320 days of sporting activities each year as well as public gardens, aquatic facilities, recreation programs and special events. 

Each week of July will focus on a particular area:

Week one – Adventure Cove Week

Week two – Parks and Trails Week

Week three – Sports Week

Week four – Recreation Program Week

Week five – Aquatics Week

Activities range from a July 9 Open Gate Day for the Azura Trails at Skyline Park, to a July 21 Kids Palooza trivia contest a July 27 $5 pool day at Shawnee North Family Aquatic Center, July 28 Water Games at Jackson Spray Park, $1 Train Rides each Thursday on the Gage Park mini-train, KONA Ice snow cones and games July 12 in Gage Park, July 19 at the park in Rossville and July 26 at Dornwood Spray Park, Food Truck Friday July 16 in Gage Park and July 30 at Shawnee North Community Center and July 31 $2 admission at Great Overland Station.

Shawnee County Parks + Recreation includes nearly 60 miles of trails, 2,625 acres of parks and 320 annual days of sporting activities. In addition, the department offers recreation programs, educational programs and golf. A combination of tax dollars, user fees and private donations enables Shawnee County Parks and Recreation to offer parks, sporting and aquatic facilities with state-of-the art features, and beautiful, nationally recognized gardens.
