Volunteer Opportunities
Are you looking for ways to get involved in the community?
SCP+R has a variety of opportunities for volunteers ranging from working in our gardens and helping at events to coaching youth sports teams and teaching wilderness skills.
We even have opportunities for you to adopt your very own park/trail or to create your own projects based on your passions/the needs that you see in the community.
Adopt-a-Park & Adopt-a-Trail Information
Our community has learned to appreciate our outdoor resources more than ever, including the over 110 parks and trails available in Shawnee County. Shawnee County Parks + Rec offers an Adopt-A-Park/Trail program that encourages this ongoing appreciation and care for our parks and trails!
What does it mean to adopt a park or trail?
This program encourages us to help the community enjoy our parks and trails through beautification activities and monthly debris pick up.
What do you gain from adopting a park or trail?
By adopting a park or trail, we can work together to promote a sense of pride and appreciation of our parks and resources. This also provides the perfect excuse to get outside!
Who can adopt a park or trail?
Anyone! Student groups. Neighborhood Associations. Church groups. Businesses looking for community engagement opportunities. Families looking to beautify their favorite parks or trails. We happily partner with anyone who is excited to partner with us!
Adopt an Island
Shawnee County Parks + Recreation Adopt an Island Program provides opportunities for companies, civic groups, institutions and individuals to adopt a Shawnee County Parks + Recreation traffic island. Shawnee County Parks + Recreation maintains a list of islands available for adoption and assigns spaces on a first-come, first-served basis with prior year participants given first right to "re-adopt" the same space.
Contact John Bell, Parks Superintendent at (785) 251-6814 or john.bell@snco.us to review options, discuss ideas and submit an application.
